Made Easy (Part 2)
Have you ever heard of the expression, “You get what you pay for?” With the proper planning and a knowledgeable contractor, you can be assured of a job well done at a reasonable cost. Your dream kitchen is within your reach! Your new family room awaits! Follow the guidance of experienced contractors:
In this issue we continue our look at making home improvements a breeze. [see the previous issue for items 1-18]
- Refrain from running a time clock. This creates an atmosphere of distrust and may not be effective or a money-saver.
- Save money by doing minimal tasks on your own, such as clean up and painting.
- Review the sample materials, especially the paint chips and color swatches prior to the order.
- Select your colors and finishes before the painter arrives to keep the schedule moving.
- Have a “go-to-guy.” Someone in the family needs to be the key contact between the contractor and the family. This will help keep communication clean and clear and avoid confusion.
- Be specific about where you want electrical outlets located and how many you want. By doing so, the electrical estimate should be more accurate.
- Demolition should begin only after the new equipment and supplies have arrived. Particularly windows, doors, appliances or any other essential items.
- To avoid loss, remove any valuables or easily damaged items from the work site.
- Children and pets in the work zone should be avoided. Alternative arrangements should be made during work time, if you are not present.
- If possible, plan for a vacation or time away during the most disruptive part of the project, such as floor refinishing. This will allow you to come back refreshed for the remainder of the job.
- To cut back on additional costs or potential delays, keep changes to a minimum. If a change is made, be sure to have the new agreement put in writing before the work begins.
- To prevent dust from the site landing in other areas, seal the entry point with plastic sheeting and blue painter’s tape.
- Be courteous of your neighbors and inform the work crew where your property lines are located to prevent materials from being placed in the wrong area.
- Keep your eye on the prize. Although the project will be disruptive, the end result will be worth it.
- Schedule a final walk through inspection with your contractor. Make a note of any tasks that need completed
- Request an Affidavit of Final Release once the job is complete and the final payment is made. This clears you of any liability for third-party claims.
No plan is completely foolproof, but with a careful planning, a knowledgeable contractor and sound advice, you’re well on your way to your new space. |

Cloth or canvas shopping bags, or even pillowcases, make terrific eco-friendly alternatives to paper or plastic bags, or to the molded plastic jack-o-lanterns so many kids use to collect candy at Halloween. |

Answer: To get the most out of your Jack O’ Lantern this year follow these simple tips:
- Wash the inside with a mild bleach solution to slow the process of decay.
- Coat the cut edges of the pumpkins with petroleum jelly to help them last longer.
- LED lights work well instead of candles.
- If you really want to make your creations last, put them in a plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator when not on display.
- Re-attach broken pieces with toothpicks 6. Discourage critters from making a meal of your pumpkin by sprinkling it with liberally with Tabasco sauce or cayenne pepper.

Gourmet Roasted
Pumpkin Seeds
Don't throw out the seeds when making Jack-O-Lanterns or cooking fresh pumpkins, they make great snacks that are rich in fiber as well as vitamins B and E. Kids especially love them. Purists will want only salt as a seasoning, but if you're feeling adventurous, experiment and have fun with seasoning blends. These roasted pumpkin seeds make tasty, healthy snacks, and it doesn't get any more frugal than this.
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups pumpkin seeds
2 teaspoons melted butter or oil
Salt to taste
Optional Seasoning To Taste:
Garlic Powder or Garlic Salt
Seasoning Salt
Black Pepper
Salt Free Seasoning Blend, such as Mrs. Dash
Cayenne Pepper
Seasoning
Salt
Cajun Seasoning Blend
Mexican Style Chili Lime Seasoning
Italian Seasoning or Other Herbs
Grated Hard Cheese such as Parmesan
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 300º F. Toss pumpkin seeds in a bowl with the melted butter or oil and seasonings of your choice. Spread pumpkin seeds in a single layer on an oiled baking sheet. (or spray with cooking spray). Bake for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown. |
