Entry Door
Welcome in these Door Terms

Your entry door is the first impression any visitor sees when they visit your home.  There's no better way to beautify the focal point of your home, than by creating a well designed entryway.  An energy efficient entryway will deliver years of savings while complimenting the beauty of your home.  When it comes to designing a door style to your taste and budget, let's get familiar with some common entry system terms.

Brickmould: decorative molding surrounding the exterior of the door frame.

Caming:  metal separator that holds individual pieces of decorative glass in place.  Caming is offered in Brass, Dark Patina, Nickel, and Satin Nickel.

Door Panel:  the actual door itself.  In combination with the frame, creates the entryway for home.

Frame:  the outside edge of the door unit surrounding the door panel.  Composed of the jambs, head and sill; the frame creates the boundary of the door and works with the door panel to ensure a tight, weatherproofed home.

Head:  horizontal piece forming the side of the door frame, ensures a tight fit for the door.

Hinges:  metal plates and ins that allow the door to swing out or in.

Jamb:  an upright piece forming the side of the door frame, ensures a tight fit for the door.

Mull Post:  structural post between the sidelite and the door.

Sidelite:  glass decorative accessory placed next to a door for ornamentations and to allow light to pass through.

Sill:  the bottom composite member of the door frame.  Composed of two pieces; the threshold and the subsill.  Works to keep weather (air and water) infiltration to a minimum.

Strikeplate:  p rotects the jamb from the hardware latch. Covers the latch and deadbolt.

Transom:   decorative glass piece placed above the door to accent the style & appearance of the door.

Weatherstripping:   flexible material surrounding door panel to protect your home from air infiltration. Should be tight enough to create a seal when the door is closed.

What is the normal maintenance for a exterior fiberglass door?
- J. Broadstreet

Mike's Reply:  Thank you for your question.   Even a well-finished exterior fiberglass door will be affected by exposure and weather living here along the Gulfcoast.  Direct sunlight will deteriorate the top/finish coat over time.  Normal maintenance is to re-apply the top coat at least every two years. Doors with a southern or western orientation, exposed to sunlight, will require frequent top-coat maintenance.
