Shutters:  Everyone Wants Options, Options

In the classic movie, Forrest Gump, Bubba says, "Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it." Like Bubba's shrimp, there are many options to protect your home during hurricane season.  When it comes to hurricane protection, Majors offers several shutter choices based on your home's protection needs.
So, let's talk about all those shutter options... Rolling Shutters, Bahama Shutters, Colonial Shutters, Accordian Shutters and Storm Panels.  All of Majors hurricane shutters are locally manufactured and are custom-made to specifically fit your home.  Plus, all of our shutters meet the Miami-Dade County Building Code requirements giving you the confidence that you need in times of severe weather. Also, hurricane shutters make an existing home very attractive in the home buying market.  Certain shutters options can enhance the look of your home and improve its selling features.
Which Shutter would work for my home?
Bahama Shutters
Bahama Shutters
Bahama shutters are a popular option for homeowners along the Gulfcoast since they align well with the architecture of their home. These shutters provide security and control of light and sound with minimum maintenance.  The shutters are manually operated from the outside (can be secured from inside in some cases).  Bahama shutters are made to order and come in a variety of custom colors.

Accordian Shutters
Accordian Shutters
Accordian shutters are a popular cost-effective option.  They provide excellent storm protection, security, sound and light control, and can be secured from either inside or outside of the building structure. Accordian shutters can have a significant impact on the architecture of a building.  Careful installation design is recommended to minimize an undesired result.  Accordians can be secured quickly and are permanently stored at the sides of each opening in a low profile stack. Available colors are white, beige, ivory and bronze.

Rolling Shutters Pensacola, FL
Rolling Shutters
Rolling shutters are the most convenient and easiest storm shutter product available.  The roll-style shutter is designed to fit almost any opening.  Operation is achieved manually with crank handles from either inside or outside of the building.  Rolling shutters can be motorized for ease of operation, and are paired with manual overrides in case of loss of power.  Rolling shutters are used for occasions other than inclement weather such as security, light and sound control and insulation. Properly installed rolling shutters have a minimum impact on the architectural integrity of your property.  Available colors are white, beige, ivory and bronze.

Arched Colonial Shutters Gulf Breeze, FL
Colonial Shutters
Colonial shutters are another popular choice for customers seeking hurricane protection that coordinates with the style of their home. Colonials provide security and control of light and sound with minimum maintenance.  The shutters are manually operated from the outside (but can be operated from the inside in some cases). Colonial shutters are available in a variety of color and style options.

Storm Panels
Storm Panels
Storm panels are the most economical form of storm protection. They are secured from outside of the dwelling.  When not in use, due care must be taken to safely and securely store panels. Installation of storm panels must be accomplished as soon as a storm threat is realized as installation does take some time.  Storm panel tracks are available in white, beige and bronze.

What is causing my window to fog up?   -J. Greene

Mike's Reply:  Thank you for your question.

The moisture in the air causes condensation. You may see more condensation in your home because of modern energy efficient homebuilding techniques and products.

The insulation and construction materials used today are designed to keep cold air outside, particularly in new windows. With the cold air kept outside, these materials also keep warm moist air inside. Older window designs were less efficient often allowing moisture to escape.

If you didn't have as much condensation before replacing your old windows, it's probably because they were drafty. Good windows and insulation all create barriers to the air exchange of a home. When combined with the additional water vapor (moisture) from showers, cooking, or from clothes dryers not vented to the outside, the result is excess moisture and a high relative indoor humidity level.

Getting out of the Weeds:  A Family's Home Improvement

"Without hard work, nothing grows but weeds." -Gordon B. Hinckley

The Majors crew volunteered on Saturday, June 26th to begin Phase 2 at the home of our "Self-Sacrificing" family, Carolyn Butler and Debbie Lewis in Milton.  The mother-daughter teacher duo were selected as the winners of the 2014 Home Repair project.

On that Saturday, the heat index put the temperature well above 100 degrees.  Despite the hot weather, the crew pushed hard and replaced all the windows, entry doors and installed hurricane shutter protection at the home.  "I am so proud of our crew for all their hard work this Saturday and we are looking forward to finishing up more updates for Mrs. Butler's home, " states Andrea Sutrick, Marketing Manager with Majors Home Improvement.  See more project photos here.
